Three Cups Of Tea

Three cups of tea: first cup your a stranger, second cup your an honored guest, and third cup your family and will be treated as such till the death if need be. This is what makes this book fantastic and amazing how such a vilified and unknown culture can go out of there way to show the utmost respect to strangers and finally accept them as family as if it was meant to be this way. If only all cultures could be so pure and without malice then things that the author of this book does would be an everyday occurrence and not just an act of heroism.

Greg Mortenson is a man among boys when it comes to giving back to those who have unselfishly given and helped him. He was trying to climb k2 a ridiculous mountain that no one has any business climbing in the first place honoring the passing of his passing sister. He failed to climb the mountain but in turn found a village called korphe in the northern range of Pakistan because he was lost and hurt and thirsty. They took him in and treated him like fricking royalty even though he is a complete stranger. After he is rested and ready to go home he vowed to build them a school since they didn’t have one and the one they went to was so far away. The crazy thing is the cost to pay a teacher is only like a dollar a day but they couldn't even afford that and the schools mostly focused on males so Greg took it upon himself to make sure he put up a school that was for the girls. He raised a lot of money to do this and one of the main donors was jean hoerni, a silicon valley genius who in turn helped co-found the CAI central Asia institute shortly before he passed away.

Mr. Mortenson acts have not gone without danger and controversy. He has gotten many death threats and was captured by the Taliban also. He has also been accused of misappropriating the money for his own personnel use and has some lawsuits in waiting. He hasn’t been found guilty of nay as of yet so have have to assume what he writes in his story is 100% true even though I am a skeptic at heart. As of today his organization has built 171 schools which teach 64,000 children which are mostly girls.

I take many things from this book into my life but the biggest is the fact that there is much we don’t know about cultures that differ from our own, so much in fact that it can be overwhelming and easy for us to forget that we are not the only humans on this earth. Like my favorite author Hunter S Thompson says “we are a doomed generation.” Maybe it's true but this book sheds some light onto the bloody battleground we call life. I give this book 5 stars because acts of kindness are the best kind of acts there is.
