When President Obama is scheduled to appear at the University of Iowa this Wednesday, the reception may be mixed once again this year. While the president's speech is bound to draw large crowds, and some local groups plan to rally protesting Obama’s visit to address the problems associated with student loan debt this election season.
Obama’s reception has never been flawless at the University of Iowa, though they are usually without major incident, and he still tends to draw a large crowd to hear him speak. Some of that crowd, however, has always included protestors assembling for various reasons against the appearance of the President.
Obama has experienced this more than once upon his visits, and this year will be no surprise yet again because several groups plan to assemble in protest of the President’s visit yet again. They will rally and walk, ending very close to where Obama is scheduled to deliver tomorrow's speech to the people attending.
The groups who have announced protests and rallies include mostly right-wing groups, including Join Americans for Prosperity, the UI Republicans, the Iowa City Tea Party and individuals interested in joining the rally alongside these groups. These groups have long been standing against the methods and views of Obama, and will be protesting the re-election of the president and his methods.
The "rally" is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m, with a group walking from a bridge located near Burlington Street all the way to the Slater Residence Hall, located across from the Field house, where President Obama is scheduled to address the guests attending the speech at 1:20 p.m. to those who have acquired tickets previously.
Most tickets issued for the President's speech list a door opening time of 10:00am. Some tickets were printed incorrectly with an opening time of 10:00pm. We have not been told whether or not these tickets will be questioned at the door. The tickets were, and still may be, available at the University of Iowa Iowa Memorial Union Box Office.
