Upcoming October Iowa City Events

There are lots of great events coming up in Iowa City over the next couple of weeks, ranging from the Englert Tehatre's Anniversary Celebration to several University Speakers.

The Englert Theatre 99th Anniversary Celebration
The Englert Theatre, part of Iowa City’s historical achievements since its opening in 1912, is celebrating its ninety-ninth anniversary by opening its door to the community that has helped it thrive, and offering great acts including the much anticipated Poison Control Center, Iris Dement, and Pieta Brown – all in one weekend. The Poison Control Center will be opening the celebratory event on Thursday, October 6th, followed by country-folk performer Iris Dement on Friday, October 7th. On Saturday, October 8th, two panels will be held, discussing “Theater Arts in the Cultural Corridor” and “The Independent Artist”. The event will be closed with a performance by poet-songwriter Pieta Brown, as she shares her art and music. These three days will be full with varieties of art. Make sure to attend one or all of these events, so that Englert Theatre can be reminded of how it is part of Iowa City and Iowa City’s community.

Supporting Iowa as a Community
In a college town, community and spirit is easily represented, but it will be especially emphasized when the River Room at the IMU is opened to fellow University of Iowa fans on Saturday, October 8th. The game starts at 11:00 a.m., and Iowa will be playing Pennsylvania State. Not only will the game be displayed on the big screen, but the River Room will be offering free food until 2 p.m. to anyone that comes to celebrate. At halftime, a raffle will be held, and the winner will win tickets to the Iowa/Purdue game – roundtrip transportation included. Anyone ready to cheer on their Iowa team is welcome to attend!

University Speakers
The University Lecture Committee will be hosting two presentations this weekend, one being Joe Sacco, a journalist and cartoonist; the other being Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez, nationally acclaimed comic artists, and brothers.

Joe Sacco will be speaking on October 7th, at 7:30 pm, at the Shambaugh Auditorium. Sacco studied journalism at the University of Oregon, and graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree. He is a citizen of Malta, and is heavily influenced by his visits around the world. His career started with the idea of reporting eyewitness experiences through the comic medium, and has flourished since the start. He has released two issues: his first titled Palestine and his second reporting the details of a small Muslim group struggling during the war in Bosnia. He is appreciated for his extensive research, honest evidence, and strong sense of sensitivity towards such brutal topics.

On October 8th, brothers Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez will be doing a lecture, starting at 7:30 pm, also at Shambaugh Auditorium. The Hernandez brothers were influenced by their mothers’ love for comic books, and their eldest brother’s passion for comics and art. Each would begin their own talents in art in the 1980’s, emphasized by punk culture. The brothers are nationally acclaimed for their comic artistry. Lectures are constantly being scheduled at the Shambaugh Auditorium – keep your eyes open!

American Craft Week
American Craft Week is a national event being held from Friday, October 7th to Sunday, October 16th. This event draws individuals and businesses from a variety of places in the United States, where the beauty and practicality of handmade objects is emphasized. More than ten Iowa businesses will be partaking in the celebrations of American Craft Week. Some of these businesses include Glassando, Modela, and DJ Rinner Goldsmith. Each day will represent a different business and a different style of art. Not only will there be displays of these crafts and arts, but the people of Iowa City are encouraged to find a class of specific artistry, and join in on the fun of hand making different items, such as the quilting class with the Iowa City Johnson County Senior Center, or the jewelry classes with Beadology.
