An Iowa City couple is being charged with beating their infant to death after an autopsy discovered the child died of blunt force trauma to the head.
On April 30, Marcus Balderas was taken to the hospital after a 911 call reported that he was having trouble breathing. He later died at the University of Iowa Hospitals.
At this point, the Iowa Department of Human Services was already investigating the couple had been mistreating their infant. Perez was arrested for connections to these injuries the day that the child died.
An autopsy discovered that 20 month old Marcus Balderas died of blunt force trauma to the head as well as many other injuries all over his body as well as internal bleeding. An investigation began after the discovery that led to the charges filed against the parents of the child.
According to Patch.com, the parents, 18 year old Mireya Balderas and 20 year old Jorge Perez are being charged with felony child-endangerment because they caused the death of their child though abuse.
During the investigation, Perez admitted to beating the child in the head, holding a pillow over its face and stepping on it several times. Balderas also admitted to hitting the child and holding a pillow over its face as well because the infant would not go to sleep.
Perez is being charged with two counts, while Balderas herself is only being charged with one count. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 50 years. Investigations on the actual circumstances of the death are continuing.
