Political and gender balance is not just something to desire on the board of regents - it's required by Iowa law. The law prevents the board from having no more than five members from one political party or the same gender. Appointees must also be approved by the Legislature.
This comes relevant as the terms of Regents Bonnie Campbell, Michael Gartner, and Rose Vasquez are expiring April 30, 2011. All are democrats, and as a result the new governor will only be able to appoint 1 additional member from his party.
The Press-Citizen reports Mike Owen, an agronomy professor and president of the ISU Faculty Senate, said: "I am very confident (Branstad) will pick very qualified individuals who will align with his philosophy."
