The University of Iowa police are beginning to catch the social media bug and use it to catch criminals, stating that it is a successful method that is on the rise today.

Now, the UI police are raving about the appeal of the social networking site for gaining information about crimes.
Last week, the UI police began to upload surveillance photos onto a Facebook page. These photos depicted individuals committing crimes. These crimes were of a few individuals stealing bikes, an unsolved crime from last month.
The Iowa City police themselves have not caught on because they feel that there are just too many people in the Iowa City area and on the network to actually make use of anything on Facebook. They don't express a resilience toward future possibilities, though, if there are more useful possibilities.
Des Moines, though, disagrees. The police here have already told of previous success with Facebook and its ability to help them catch criminals effectively. They believe the popularity of the social network for solving crimes will only increase in the future, as it is just beginning to catch on.
Even though these recent uses for the University of Illinois have not been specifically successful, the police are optimistic because of previous instances of success with social media and its usefulness for solving crimes on the campus and in Iowa in general.
