The School Board of Iowa City has decided that it is time to take a second look at the bullying policy in order to repair some concerns that have come about with the policy and what it may lack.
One board member states that the reparation needs to be made because the policy hints at very severe punishments for bullying, but it does not specifically say what the punishments may be.
The bullying policy is directed toward any sort of activity in any form that creates a hostile environment for another student at the school. It includes physical, verbal and even electronic actions.
The problem that is faced is that the School Board will have trouble setting the right punishments for certain actions, and the particular situations that happen are always subjective, so punishment will be very hard to set down.
The issue was brought up earlier this month despite the apparent satisfaction with the punishments issued thus far. Most students reported satisfaction with the actions taken upon bullying reports.
Suggestions have been made to implement specific programs that will effectively solve specific bullying issues so that they are not just punished, but no longer continue. This will take a lot more work than just a punishment being issued.
This aim will help to decrease the levels of bullying instead of just punishing the offenders in order to satisfy the victims. Rectifying the situation will make bullying less common, and work toward solving the problem instead of just reprimanding it.
