Quimby's Bookstore: Let Them Have CAKE!

On June 16th & 17th, Quimby's Bookstore in Chicago, nationally renowned for it support and display of independent comics and zines, will be hosting its first annual CAKE convention (Chicago Alternative Comics Expo), which will feature scores of top independent creators along with many others.

Quimby's Bookstore, located at 1854 W. North Street, Chicago, has long been the forefront in the Midwest  for supporting and proliferating independent comics and zines sent in by creators from around the globe. According to their website, Quimby's was founded in 1991 by Steven Svymbersky with the intention to "carry every cool-bizarre-strange-dope-queer-surreal-weird publication ever written and published." They have since been immensely successful doing just that. Anyone who has a comic or a zine who wishes to have it displayed at Quimby's can do so by simply filling out an itemized form and mailing it to them. They take only a small commission and in exchange showcase your work in their store and on their blog.

CAKE stems from this celebration of creators and the furthering of community between artists, writers, and enthusiasts. The two day long event is free and open to the public from 11am-6pm, where all may enjoy meeting artists and purchasing their works directly, experiencing educational workshops and lectures, and also interacting with small press publishers to encourage everyone's own future works.

Some of this year's guests include Jeffrey Brown, Paul Hornschemeier, a few of the artists from the comic collective Pizza Island, yours truly, and over a hundred other creators and publishers

Be sure to make it out there for it will be unlike any other convention you've attended, all for the sweet price of FREE.
