Iowa Review Offers Award for Veteran Writing

The Iowa Review has started giving out a reward called the Jeff Sharlet Memorial Award from early spring all the way through to the middle of June. This award is specifically given to veteran writers who share their stories.

This award is open to all military veterans and active personnel. These individuals can submit any fiction, creative nonfiction or poetry work as part of the competition for a prize that is named after a Vietnam War Veteran.

The works submitted can be literally anything. The subject matter is not restricted to anything about the war or any specific topic at all. Whatever the writer wants to write is acceptable material.

The goal is to get entries that will reflect on the times that the veterans have gone through at this time when they return home from the experiences that they went through in the war and in previous wars as well. It is geared toward opening doors for veteran writers and showing them an outlet for their thoughts and experiences.

The submissions will all be judged by the author Robert Olen Butler. The winners will be selected and given $1,000 and publication in the Iowa Review literary magazine.

The award is named after Jeff Sharlet, who was a Vietnam War Veteran that became famous for his anti-war efforts and activism. He published many works voicing his opinion against the war.

So far, there are many submissions to the contest, but more are anticipated when it comes closer to the deadline. Reception to the contest and the prizes has been good so far.
