Making The Transition

Making the transition to the University of Iowa can be a long road, filled with many small details that need to be remembered. Several students are moving on from high school, a huge change, while many others are transferring from smaller colleges - possibly not realizing the vast differences between a community college and a big university.

There are a large number of things to keep in mind while organizing your transition, to help make the change as smooth as possible. I recommend opening a spreadsheet on your computer to keep track of what you've done so far, and who you've talked to.

First of all, you must handle your academics. Most of this is self-explanatory. Simply get an appointment with an advisor to discuss which classes you need to take for your major, and they'll walk you through this process. Secondly, unless you want to live under a bridge you will need to take care of housing. Begin your search for apartments (or your applications for on-campus housing) as soon as humanly possible to ensure you get something reasonable. Third, you may need a part time job. There are a variety of options for work in the area, and a number of places to find employment opportunities. It is a good idea to find something relative to your major, to give you experience to work with after graduation.
